a poem

sunburned, tracy california

they are bent exposing
white undersides
equal parts strength and frailty

i board a plane
120 tons of steel and acrylic
that launches me from
this reminder of my
own fragile and tenuous state

i realize that i am the leaf
i cling tenaciously
to a branch
i am part of a whole that is
resilient

yet as a leaf, i know
i will soon
blow away
